An Introduction to Traditional Water Gilding
(3-Day Workshop)
~
This popular intensive workshop introduces the student to the traditional method of water gilding. Students are guided through each of the steps including preparation of gesso and clay bole grounds, laying of genuine 23k gold leaf, burnishing, and toning. The oil gilding method will also be discussed as well as an overview of patination principles.

Handouts, including recipes, a bibliography of educational materials, and a supplier list will be provided. An emphasis is placed upon learning rather than the necessary completion of a major project; however, students will have the opportunity to gild an object in genuine gold leaf to take home.

Traditional water gilding is designed for use on wood and may be used for such objects as frames, furniture, and architectural elements.

Workshop includes 23k gold leaf for the class to share, materials, use of all gilding tools, and objects to gild for learning the basics of this beautiful craft..

How to handle Gold Leaf...
using the gilder's tools of the trade

(1/2 Day Workshop)

This exciting new 1/2 day workshop focuses specifically on how to handle genuine gold and silver leaf & other metals used in gilding including aluminum, brass (dutch metal), & palladium. One of the most difficult tasks students face when learning to gild is how to handle the leaf itself as well as properly using the traditional tools used by the gilder. This hands-on focus class will address handling genuine gold leaf and demonstrate the proper ways of using the gilder's knife, pad, burnisher, & 'tip' - the flat 3" brush used to pick up gold leaf as an aid in applying gold to a prepared surface. Alternative methods of handling aluminum brass & leaf will also be demonstrated.

Workshop includes materials and use of all tools.

Oil Gilding…and other Mordants
(1-Day Workshop)

Mordant gilding, the application of any of a variety of binders onto a prepared ground to adhere gold leaf, is a centuries old gilding technique. Many examples can be found in Cennini’s 15th c treatise “Il Libro dell’ Arte”, including the preparation of oil size. Students are guided through the oil gilding process as used for applying gold, silver, and other metal leaves to frames, furniture, and decorative objects. Other suitable materials for oil gilding include glass and stone. Each student is provided an unfinished picture frame to gild and take home, using an acrylic emulsion mordant and brass leaf. Students also participate in a hands-on oil gilded class project using genuine 23k gold leaf.

Workshop includes use of all classroom materials, gold leaf shared by the class, and supplies and use of all gilding tools.
