gessoing balls ornaments
Gesso applied to ornaments during restoration

Each gilded object is cared for with a conservational approach whereby all attempts are made to retain an original finish whenever possible. When restoration is required due to missing ornamentation, delaminated gilded surfaces, or sectional detachment, re-gilding of surrounding areas are toned and blended to match the existing gilding as closely as possible.

Although total re-gilding of such items as frames and furniture may sometimes be an option it is often discouraged as it can affect the overall value of the object and impact historical preservation. The ultimate decision in such instances, however, resides with the owner of the piece.

Restoration services include:
  • Consolidation of delaminating gilded gesso surfaces
  • Mould casting of missing ornaments
  • Re-gilding when required
  • Re-attachment of broken sections
