Toning The Gilded Surface

‘Antiquing’ Gold, Silver, and other Metal Leafs

Gilded Frames as well as Gilded Furniture, Panels, and Architectural Elements are often given a Patina whereby various topcoats, Tints, or Washes are applied to simulate age. The gold or silver leaf, both genuine and imitation, may be abraded giving the impression of wear, exposing the underlying colored ground beneath the gilded leaf.

Raw Umber ranging in Values from light passages over 23k water gilded gold leaf to heavier deposits of pigment found on ornate oil gilded brass leafed picture frames. Black in the form of a Casein Wash can offer an intriguing complexity over white gold, silver, palladium, and aluminum leaf

This new, four-part Series takes the student through an Introduction to the Toning process. During class, several objects will be gilded using the Mordant gilded method with both Oil Size and Water Based Leaf Adhesive.  An existing example of traditional water gilding will be used in the online demonstrations.

Students will learn to::

  • Abrade and Rub the gilded leaf to simulate Wear for Traditional Water Gilding and Mordant Gilding

  • Prepare and Apply Custom-Mixed Shellac from Flakes

  • Apply a Rottenstone Buff for Shellac

  • Prepare, Apply, and Seal Water-Based Casein Washes to Tone or ‘Antique’, both Imitation and Genuine Gold and Silver Leaf for Aging and creating a Patina.

  • Apply a heavily pigmented Oil-Based Japan Paint wash.

  • Prepare and Apply ‘300 Year Old Dust’

A review of Shellac Pigment Mixtures will also be discussed for those interested in exploring using an air brush as a Toning option.

This class is designed for both the beginning gilder and those who would like to take their gilding to the next level for greater tonal effects.

Note: Question and Answer periods are included in each weekly session. Classes are both Live Online and Recorded. Recordings remain viewable for six months after the series ends.

A Materials List will be provided upon Registration. ~
