*Materials: Students will just need to bring to class either 1 Booklet 22k Gold Leaf (Loose Leaf) or for cost-savings Genuine Silver Leaf, (Loose Leaf). Substitutions such as a lower kt leaf are fine but must be Loose Leaf. A Promo Code and Website Links for Gilded Planet will be provided upon Registration..
All Other Materials are Included in Tuition.

This Special One-Day Intensive Gilding Class in San Francisco combines both popular Gilding Classes Gilding For Absolute Beginners and Gilding For Works of Art!
Students explore the various methods of working with gold and silver leaf for 3D Objects as well as canvas and paper for both background and embellishment. As a new addition to this class students will also water gild and burnish a Mini-3” Panel as an example of Early Renaissance Water Gilding.
Learn to lay a genuine 22k gold leaf ground for painting as well as brass and silver colored aluminum leaf. Discuss the use of Topcoats and Isolating Coats such as MSA Varnish, GAC 200, and Shellac to protect tarnishable metals. Class discussions will also include:
Addressing compatibility issues associated with successfully combining various paint mediums and gilding
Painting over Gilding versus Gilding over Painting
Conservational Concerns related to Future Cleaning of Gilded Paintings
Instructor Charles Douglas will patiently take you through the intricacies of working with delicate gold leaf and how to tame it with the proper use of the gilder's tip, pad, and knife. Explore such ancient mordants as gum ammoniac, and glair, and contemporary oil size and acrylic emulsion. ~
NOTE: All Levels Welcome! Feel free to bring a work of art though not required. Optional gilding kits are available through Gilded Planet. Gilding Kits are not Required for the class since the use of studio tools is provided. Students will need to purchase One Booklet of 22k Gold Leaf for the Class. All Other Materials are In Students’ Tuition including a Pre-Gessoed Frame or Panel to take home.

This Special 2-day Intensive class is designed for all those looking to learn the Traditional Method of Water Gilding, from Fine Artists to Picture Framers to Furniture Makers and Architectural Gilders! Students review how to prepare and apply gesso and clay bole while concentrating on gilding and burnishing genuine 22k gold leaf. Join us as we take a journey through each of the steps in this beautiful ancient method of gilding. Panels and Frames will be prepared for you to focus on laying gold leaf the first day and burnishing the next. Gesso and Bole will also be covered day 2!
Traditional Water Gilding is the same for any object of wood. The subtle differences between gilding Panels, Picture Frames, and other wooden objects will be discussed while every student gets to take home their project gilded in class.
Students may choose either a Frame or Panel for their Class Project (email the Gilding Studio to request your preference after Registering and it will be provided to you on your first day of class).
Materials other than the gold leaf are included and students may use the studio gilding tools during class (optional gilding kits are available through gildedplanet upon request).

Materials Required by Student: 1 Booklet of 22k Loose Gold Leaf should be sufficient for both classes. A booklet of Genuine Silver could be purchased as additional leaf for the Beginners class for savings. 22k is recommended though for the Water Gilding Class.
