During the early 17th Century a Young Rembrandt explored the gilding of copper plates as a substrate and background for three small Paintings: Old Woman Praying (Residenzegalerie, Salzberg), Laughing Man (collection of the Mauritshuis, The Hague), and Young Man/Self-Portrait (Nationalmuseum Stockholm). Of these, Old Woman Praying was the only one painted directly over gilded copper without the intervening use of gesso as an added ground.

During this 1-Day Special Class students will be guided in the oil gilding method as used by Rembrandt using genuine 23k Red Gold on a Copper Plate measuring the approximate size of Rembrandt’s Old Woman Praying and his particular choice of gold leaf.

Students will also take part in an insightful discussion concerning the historical significance of this particular approach taken by Rembrandt, his choice of gold leaf, and the Research Findings of Conservational analysis overseen by the Residenzgalerie Research Office involving the use of X-ray fluorescence spectrography and infra-red reflectography to draw conclusions of the underlying components of the painting of Old Woman Praying.

This class is Limited to 6 Students so Early Registration is encouraged to secure your seat. Students will need to bring 1 Booklet of Loose 23kt Red Gold Leaf. A link to Gilded Planet as a suggested supplier and Promo Code will be provided Upon Registration. Additional Copper Plates ~
